as we like their live performances and their record, we took advantage of their promotional visit to paris to chat for five minutes with alice and ethan, the two canadians from cc in the premises of their french record label.
vice: you don't look super fit. you have heads halfway between a clubber coming down and a tired emo, is that normal?
ethan: well, no, but we just came out of a really awful photo shoot. the guy was just unbearable, he wanted us to stand back to back and rub each other's ass while looking at the lens. No, but what is this delirium, who the fuck did he think we were? otherwise, we just got back from los angeles where we did two three shows, and we're really sleepy.
vise: ah, well, let's avoid the technical questions that are a little boring then. um, what is this snare that always comes back in your last album?
ethan: at first, I used to always work with the same drumkit, then i found a new one that i still use today. it's simple, as soon as i find a better one, i exploit it thoroughly. i like having a super limited sound bank, you see, it takes up a bit the challenge of working with only one kick, one snare, one bass.
vise: speaking of dumb stuff, there's this teaser for your latest album on youtube that's high. you can see a guy throwing a big brick at a bum's mouth, how did you do it?
alice: a friend of ours from vancouver did this. it's obviously a trick, we're not accomplices in murder. the cement block is made of foam and the blood spurts are special effects. after it's cool, this video makes people react, there are those who love it and those who hate it. we love it.
vise: you made an appearance in an episode of skins. it's a kind of trashy tv series for depressive teenagers, do you know about it?
alice: yes, in fact we were contacted to play our own role. we said, "ok, why not, it can be fun," and we realized later that it was a pretty popular series. the truth is, we still haven't watched an episode.
vise: you guys are tired, i don't want to piss you off, but what is this beef on the internet between you and this guy who claims that you "stole his art" to make t-shirts with madonna's face screwed up?
alice: this story is really starting to get us drunk. the thing is that the guy is not even the real author of the illustration. we found this drawing of madonna with a black eye on an old punk concert fly. he redesigned it for us at the time when we were still a small group, and now that we're known, he yells everywhere that we put a carrot on him. In truth, we've always wanted to give him cash, but he continues to ignore it, because the buzz around this story brings him more publicity. so we got a little bored and deleted his myspace page.
ethan: besides, we don't hold grudges, and if this motherfucker reads you, tell him that his check is waiting for him.
vise: message transmitted. do you have any friends left anyway?
ethan: haha. since we've been filming, we've kind of given up on everyone. we lost contact with our friends for the first time when we disappeared to make this album, then again when we started to tour well in clubs. today, we get along well with teenagers, klaxons or even Health guys from los angeles. they're actually our buddies now.
vise: you read vice with them, right?
ethan: actually, i was collecting vice at the time. i have all the numbers. even the first ones when it was still called voice. by the way, there is now a french version, isn't there?
vise: uh, yeah.
ethan: that's a good thing.
